August Day Trip to Uruguay

 One of the things we wanted to do while in Argentina was to take a ferry over to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay which is a UNESCO site built by the Portuguese in the 1600's.   Its about a 75 minute early morning ferry ride over to the town and we were accompanied by Elder and Sister Huntsman the other MLS missionaries in the mission.  The town is across the Rio Plata that Buenos Aires sits on as an inlet for the River into the Atlantic Ocean.  We had lots of good views of the river looking towards Buenos Aires



And some even better views of the lighthouse on the Point that Colonia del Sacramento sits on:






Lots of 500 year old cobblestone streets, fun little shops, great restaurants cafes on the street sides, old cars turned into art and historical evidence of the struggle between the Portuguese and Spanish governments for control of South America.




I see things like this and wonder at the history of all these cars and how they ended up on these streets.




We ate at a nice restaurant overlooking the river and Linda ordered a "Chivito", which is the national dish of Uruguay, that is a large steak sandwich with the obligatory fried egg on top and I just got a large steak.   Steak is widely available at most restaurants and grilled to perfection.


We enjoyed this day quite a bit as a break from the work we do every day as MLS missionaries and returned on the ferry that night ready to work at what we are called to do here in Argentina.

First Week in Argentina

It has been an interesting first week in Argentina but one that we are loving even with all the challenges of getting use to how things work in Argentina and how to live in a foreign country.  We have learned to laugh as things take three times longer than they should if we can figure things out at all as some things we are still working out.   As an example of things we have had to figure out is the following picture to help explain.  We are living in a town North of Buenos Aires called San Fernando which is a nice little suburb with narrow streets but beautiful park and downtown shopping area.  We have to pay close attention to these signs as we drive: Most streets are one way cobblestone streets and stop signs are non-existent so the arrow tells you the way the traffic is flowing and which way to look for oncoming traffic before you cross the street.   Its a little nerve wracking as a new driver but somehow it all works in this city.    We...

Week #5 in Argentina

 We continue to gain understanding of how we can help members, leaders and missionaries on our mission as that is the major part of our calling as MLS missionaries in Argentina.   There are three pairs of missionaries serving in the Pilar Ward and we took two of the pairs to lunch at McDonalds on separate days to ask them how we could help them and from those meetings scheduled a night to go visit newly baptized members and begin to talk about the temple and what they needed to do to begin preparing to go to the temple.  We visited 5 families on Thursday night and below are pictures from those visits. Week #2 in Argentina

Our first full week in Argentina continued to be full of learning new things and how to survive in a new country along with being effective in the work we have been called to do here.   I was able to experience a first interaction with an Argentinian Police Officer as I missed a turn into the mission office so crossed a double yellow line into a driveway to turn around and just happened to do that right in front of an officer standing on the side of the road and, yes, i now know you cannot cross a double yellow line no matter what.   He talked so fast I couldn't understand what he was telling me so just said, "No entiendo" a few times, he asked for my license, my passport (which I didn't have).  At this point i was envisioning a dark cell in an Argentine prison but luckily Linda had her passport copy which appeased him and after a stern lecture about obeying the laws which I partly understood, he let me go with no prison term or fine..whew...
